Description
Polymyxin B Sulfate, Neomycin Sulfate, Dexamethasone 0.1% is a multiple dose anti-infective steroid combination in sterile suspension for topical application. The otic preparation of Neomycin Sulfate, Polymyxin B Sulfate, Dexamethasone 0.1% combines two antibiotics offering broad-spectrum antibacterial activity with the anti-inflammatory activity of a tested corticosteroid, dexamethasone for combating certain microbial infections of exterior parts of the ear(s). The preparation is formulated in an isotonic vehicle containing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose for maximum effectiveness and comfort.
Each mL of solution contains: Active: Polymyxin B Sulfate 8,000 units, Neomycin Sulfate 3.5 mg, Dexamethasone 1 mg.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: Preservatives: Benzalkonium Chloride 0.004%.
Vehicle: Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose 0.5% Inactives and Purified Water.
Action
Pharmacology: Polymyxin B Sulfate is bactericidal and most effective against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. Development of resistant strains is rare. The following gram-negative organisms are highly susceptible to Polymyxin B Sulfate: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aerobacter aerogenes, Escherichia Coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Koch-Weeks bacteria. Neomycin sulfate is a broad spectrum antibiotic. Some organisms that are sensitive to this antibiotic are: Staphylococcus aureus, Corynebacterium diphteriae, Streptococcus viridans, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae. Dexamethasone is the most potent of a series of 16-methyl substitute hydrocortisone analogs. It causes inhibition of the inflammatory response to itching agents of a mechanical, chemical or immunological nature.
Indications/Uses
Allergic inflammatory conditions of the external ear canal complicated by infections caused by organisms susceptible to Polymyxin B Sulfate and Neomycin Sulfate. Adjunctive management of acute or chronic steroid responsive dermatoses of the external ear.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially, instill 3-4 drops bid-tid, then may be reduced gradually. If necessary a gauze wick may be saturated with a few drops but the wick should be changed every 12 to 24 hours or as prescribed by the physician.
Contraindications
Infectious tuberculous lesions of the ear, chicken pox, Vaccinia and herpes simplex. Sensitivity to any of the components.
Special Precautions
Antibiotic-containing eardrops should be used with extreme caution in cases where the tympanic membrane is perforated. Avoid prolonged use.
Storage
Keep tightly closed after use. Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
